Consultant Biography

Mr Ahmed was educated at the University of Cambridge and Imperial College School of Medicine, graduating in 2001 with the Gold medal in Pathology. He also attained an MA in experimental psychology from Cambridge.

He completed higher surgical ENT training in London teaching hospitals including The Royal London and St Bartholomew’s, Charing Cross, The Royal National Throat Nose and Ear and Great Ormond Street Hospitals; renowned centres of excellence and academia. During this time, he was awarded competitive research fellowships from The Wellcome Trust, The Bart’s and London Charity and was a Royal College of Surgeons of England academic research-fellow. These culminated in an award of a PhD in molecular oncology in 2015 for his work at The Bart’s Cancer Institute where he genetically optimized a Vaccinia virus strain for the purposes of immuno-therapy of cancer.

He Joined Barts Health and UCLH NHS Trusts as a consultant head and neck surgeon in October 2017.

His specialist interests include the surgical management of neck and face lumps, encompassing benign and malignant head and neck tumours of all subsites including salivary gland and thyroid. In addition, he has a particular interest and expertise in the surgical management of voice, complex airway and swallowing disorders and obstructive sleep apnoea refractory to CPAP.

He is skilled in laryngeal microsurgery, transoral laser and robotic surgery and is part of a team that is one of the largest minimally invasive, transoral laser and robotic surgical practices in the UK.

He runs head and neck “one stop” and voice multidisciplinary clinics at Barts Health. There, he also forms part of a dedicated team that is able to offer every modality of treatment for patients suffering with OSA ranging from CPAP to transoral robotic surgery. Indeed, the team’s latest surgical audit has demonstrated tremendous success with 90% of OSA patients on CPAP who were treated by robotic surgery, not needing to use their CPAP post operatively.

In addition, he has a high volume advanced endoscopic sinus surgery practice with utilization of image navigation and is therefore in a unique position to be able to offer safe, state of the art surgical treatment from nasal passage to voice box.

Mr Ahmed is currently chairman and lead of the head and neck cancer MDT, a founding member of the Robotic users’ group and a member of the thyroid MDT at Barts Health.

He has a keen research interest in minimally invasive transoral surgery and molecular treatment of cancers. He is an honorary clinical lecturer at Queen Mary University of London, is widely published in peer reviewed scientific journals and has written numerous book chapters in respected surgical and clinical textbooks. His research and clinical experience are regularly presented at national and international meetings.

He holds a PGC in Medical education and is education co-lead at Bart’s health; facilitating a training program for North-Thames higher surgical trainees and junior doctors. He is also part of the faculty in a number of London based instructional training courses in ENT. His involvement in academia and teaching means he keeps abreast of the latest evidence-based treatment protocols and technology in ENT.

Mr Ahmed’s colleagues would describe him as kind, friendly, a team player and skilled and diligent in the surgery he performs. Most importantly, he has gained a reputation for providing the highest quality care to every patient he treats. After establishing a diagnosis, if it is deemed appropriate, he will individualize medical and surgical therapy with care and attention to detail. He will be readily accessible throughout their clinical journey and beyond, to try and ensure as comfortable an experience as possible.
